Trouble

The next day and the BBC had various experts discussing what might happen with our aging population, and the prognosis was not good.

Laz appeared in my suite after lunch. ‘I have been monitoring many of the masons, as have my brethren, and a small group has formed, intent on killing you – if not passionately determined to kill you.’

‘And their fear?’

‘That you grow in influence each week and that someday soon someone will break ranks and tip you off.’

‘Give them all chronic dysentery for now, and their lieutenants. Have they selected gunmen?’

‘They use an ex-SAS officer who will do most anything for money, a man that has spent time in Africa.’

‘Have him meet with an accident, a quiet accident, no publicity.’

‘He will be replaced quickly…’

‘We can discuss it when they’re ready to strike, after they get off the toilet that is.’

‘I shall visit the offices of his security company and … have some fun.’

I smiled. ‘Please do.’

Laz appeared at 7pm after knocking. ‘The offices of Sandbag Security will need a Vatican exorcist.’

‘They saw a ghost?’

‘A ghost made a mess, terrified the secretaries, set off fire extinguishers, set fire to papers, caused chairs to move, birds flew into their windows and died. And that was just for starters.

‘When the senior staff arrived I returned everything to normal, and they found nothing of interest, save a dead and decaying 200kg dolphin on their boardroom table. It will be hard to move and hard to explain to the authorities, dolphins are protected.

‘The RSPCA turned up after a tip-off, with the police, who were dumbfounded by a large dead dolphin on the boardroom table. It has been taken away as evidence, but the smell will linger. Photos of the dead dolphin have been sent to the media.’

‘The masons will be … confused, to say the least, and not wanting to use that firm,’ I noted. ‘Good, we bought some time.’

‘The gang now believe their phones to be tapped, and that they have a traitor.’

‘Link in that policeman who fled to France,’ I suggested.

‘Ah, yes, since they already suspect him. I will leave some evidence behind.’ He lifted his head and turned. ‘A man linked to the ex-SAS officer is on a reconnaissance of your property business here in Leicester.’

‘Leave him to me.’ I sat and closed my eyes.

Floating above the High Street, I imagined the man, and was soon down at street level as he sat in a coffee shop.

‘Wanker,’ an old lady said to him.

He blinked at her. ‘Er … what did you say?’

‘Wanker, I said.’

An old man turned his head. ‘Yes, definitely a wanker.’

A baby in a pram lifted up, dummy spat out. ‘Wanker!’ came a small voice.

Coffee cup down, my man was now startled, shocked and worried, and my man was off and walking quickly, a puzzled glance back. All looked normal in the coffee shop, no one was watching him.

Around a corner, he picked up the pace and headed back to his car. Suddenly his path was blocked by a young girl in a red dress.
